A
familiar, friendly face behind a cafe counter has a real value in
a hectic, crowded place like New York City. It means a lot to be able
to go to a place on the corner where someone knows your name and recognizes
your face. Honorio aka Omar, was one of those people that knew your
name and recognized your face when you appeared in the Zanny's doorway
to fill up on food or coffee. And we knew his face and name, too.
Sadly, Omar passed away suddenly in the early morning hours of July
6th 2006. Some things in life are quite simply senseless and this
is one of them. All of us still mourn the fact that days before he
died, he was so full of life--looking forward to a vacation, smiling,
working away, joking with customers and fellow workers. He made our
frequent and sometimes not so frequent stops by Zanny's worthwhile.
He was really good at his job and he didn't miss a day of work in
two years. The place is still great, but it won't be the same without
Omar pacing around behind the counter or sneaking a break on the sidewalk.
He was a vital part of that warmth that keeps you going back. His
smile, his sense of humor, his kitchen skills, and most of all his
camaraderie will be sorely missed by Zanny's staff and patrons alike.
We can only guess what joy he brought to people in his personal life.
His death at such a young vital age is a real tragedy. Our sympathy
and respects go out to his wife and family.
Rest In Peace, Honorio.
